The Mission Route – Loreto 400

This weekend the “Loreto 400″ desert race is hosted in Loreto again. This annual motorsport competition is one of the bigger races at the southern Baja. Under regular circumstance a fair amount of local desert racers and some from up-road register to compete in this off-road event. The 200some miles route is covering some outstanding terrain after the start in Loreto, the home of the Nuestra Senora de Loreto mission, one of the first to be erected at Baja Sur. After a tight climb into the La Giganta mountain range with some stunning drop offs the race teams will head in direction of the 300 year old San Javier mission situated in a green oasis in the middle of the sizzling desert. After that they continue to Piedra Parada and approach the area that claimed a lot of victims at the 2007 Baja 1000 with it’s deep silt beds. More of this type of nasty surprises for off-road racers waits at Maria Auxilliadora followed by Pancho Villa and into Comondu.San Miguel and San Jose de Comondu, also home of the Mission of San Jose, were two of the most important towns in southern Baja before Highway 1 bypassed it, and is one of the most beautiful hidden secrets of Baja. Surrounded by mountains and blessed with lots of water, this area is an oasis that appears from the harsh desert. From San Jose de Comondu via San Casimiro and Santa Isabel the course closes the loop at Rancho Viejo to head back to Loreto.
